Projects: Renovation-Historical

SteppingStone Theatre

The former Grace Community Church, a 100-year-old architectural gem listed on the St. Paul Historic Hill District’s National Register of Historic Places, was given a careful renovation to become the new home of SteppingStone Theatre, a 19-year-old children’s theatre company. The renovation included the conversion of the sanctuary into a 430-seat theatre with a proscenium- style stage equipped with modern lighting and sound capabilities. Improvements were made to the exterior and classrooms, dressing rooms and administrative offices were constructed to house all of the company’s operations and programs. The $4.8 million project, which was awarded a 2008 historic preservation award, made SteppingStone Theatre a neighborhood institution as well as a newly important player in the performing-arts community.

Riverwood Pines Apartments

Riverwood Pines Apartments in Little Falls, Minnesota is a model example of how public-private partnerships can yield extraordinary preservation results. Formerly the home of Our Lady of Angels Academy, a boarding school headed by the Franciscan Sisters of Belle Prairie, the nearly century-old building sat vacant for more than 30 years. Now, the renovated building is once again a pillar of this rural community. Not surprisingly, the 24 living units, which combine historic character and modern comforts, were all filled within a month of the project’s completion in late 2006. The $2.5 million project won a 2007 historic preservation award.
