Indígena by Owamni is a restaurant founded by James Beard Award-winning Chef Sean Sherman, and owned and operated by the nonprofit North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS). To mark its next chapter, the acclaimed establishment evolved its name from Owamni to Indígena by Owamni and relocated to the long-vacated restaurant space on the main floor of the Guthrie Theater, doubling its footprint in an expanded, culturally grounded space featuring over 200 indoor seats and space for a future outdoor patio.

Indígena by Owamni’s new home overlooks the Mississippi River—a site of deep historical significance to the Dakota people. Flannery Construction refurbished the restaurant, installing new tile on the bar faces, a vibrant metallic paint on the columns, new flooring and refinished terrazzo. Two large projection screens were painted for digital art in the dining area, and a large wall graphic of St. Anthony Falls was installed in the lobby along with mood lighting.
