Project Details

After operating out of a former church for its first 46 years, the Playwrights’ Center hired Flannery Construction to renovate a set of buildings in the Creative Enterprise Zone of St. Paul to become the organization’s new headquarters. Playwrights’ Center needed more space that could accommodate rehearsals and performances, as well as individual writing and collaboration — and it needed to be accessible to everyone. Through a mix of public and private financing, it acquired three connected buildings, each of which required different levels of renovation or demolition. The new facility maintains the character of the original structures but with modern finishes, and includes a theater, library, and individual and collaborative work and meeting spaces. An elevator was installed to ensure accessibility. Unique design elements include a two-story curtain wall that creates a warm and inviting entrance that shines at night, two custom staircases, and whimsical lighting and fixtures throughout the building.
